Tanzania Highlights Safari

Join Jean Wethmar, the founder of Glam Girls LUX Travels in Africa, where she is your wonderful host to a select group of travellers for her Tanzania Highlights Safari.  Jean's trips are a private group of travellers, typically lady travellers with the same wanderlust and spirit of adventure, that she has. On occasions we include the men in our lives on our travels, this maybe one of those occasions – please enquire.

Tanzania Highlights Safari is a small group tour offering an exclusive hosted service where you will explore Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the great Serengeti.  Finally, it will all be topped off with a relaxing and fun-filled few days in beautiful Zanzibar, where you get to wash your safari dust off in the warm Indian Ocean.

Tanzania really does offer some of the most impressive game viewing and conservation areas on the planet.  Tanzania is a storybook setting for one of Jean's popular hosted trips and undoubtedly one of our most famous safari destinations.

The vast and beautiful Serengeti is one of Africa's most awe-inspiring safari areas.  Elephant, buffalo, Maasai giraffe, and plenty of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and a variety of antelopes live or migrate through here, of course, all hunted by the lion and leopard for which the Serengeti is famous. Serengeti means "endless plains" in the Maasai language, and it is often considered one of the quintessential safari settings.

The Ngorongoro Crater sits between the Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks.  The Crater is the world's largest intact, unflooded caldera; or collapsed volcano.  The volcanic soil is incredibly rich in nutrients, making for great grasslands, forests, stream-fed swamps, and of course, abundant food for grazing animals.  Where there is prey, there are predators – and, as such, the Ngorongoro Crater is almost second to none for wildlife viewing.

This nine night ultimate bush and beach itinerary, in which we have combined various wildlife-rich destinations with one of Africa's most popular and sought-after islands, the beautiful spice island, Zanzibar.  This historical island is full of atmosphere, spice plantations and beautiful beaches and is just a short hop from the mainland.  Think beautiful, clear, turquoise waters, patches of reefs, miles of palm-tree fringed white sandy beaches.

Arusha is Tanzania’s vibrant safari hub, situated at the foot of Mount Meru. Your dinner and accommodation will be at the gorgeous Arusha Coffee Lodge, offering a relaxed meet and greet, where you really can get excited for the journey ahead.

Arusha Coffee Lodge is a tranquil sanctuary located in a verdant coffee plantation just outside the bustle of the city; a perfect retreat after a long international flight.  Comprising of 30 Plantation Houses in the evergreen coffee fields, Arusha Coffee Lodge has been designed around the original landowner’s home dating back to the early 1900s.

The tree-lined driveway guides you to the warm and inviting main area with its quiet, understated aura of luxury.  Here you’ll find vibrant gardens, a spa and a swimming pool, and of course, the lovely restaurant Bacchus where you’ll have your first dinner to kick off your tour.

Day two sees the group heading towards the forested outside slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania.  The short plane journey drops us at Manyara Airstrip for our connection to Gibb’s Farm overlooking the centuries-old Great Rift Valley.  Your safari starts, however, before getting to the beautiful Gibb’s Farm, as the journey includes the stunning Lake Manyara National Park, with picnic lunches to make the most of your safari en-route.

Finally, arrive late afternoon at your home for the next few days, Gibb’s Farm.  This is a sanctuary for the senses to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul.  It really is a destination in itself and a sanctuary for safari-goers who take time to immerse in the sense of wellbeing at Gibb’s Farm.

It is from here, on the next day, that you will venture to the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania’s famous destinations, offering rich grasslands and permanent water sources, which feed enormous numbers of grazers, which in turn, provide the abundant predators with their food.

From Gibb’s Farm, we head by plane north to the Serengeti with the destination of the Serengeti Pioneer Camp.  This gorgeous camp is ideally situated, offering superlative sweeping views overlooking Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the endless plains, and, of course, access to abundant wildlife, including the ‘Big 5’.

Serengeti Pioneer Camp has its own individual style and feel. Paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1930s, a time when an African safari was indeed a journey into the unknown, Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s ‘zero footprint’ and close proximity to nature combines to make a memorable and distinctive base to explore this stunning area.

Comprising of twelve tented accommodations, all of which have ensuite facilities including a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and showers, the tent interiors evoke the very best of an era long-gone but certainly not forgotten.

Park Hyatt in Zanzibar from the Air

Once you’ve had your fill of Africa’s incredible savannahs and wildlife, another plane journey awaits as you’re whisked directly to the enigmatic, beautiful spice island Zanzibar!  Descending over this paradise with its turquoise waters, white sands, and forested outcrops is a journey in itself.  Have your camera at hand, as this most historic of islands is full of atmosphere, spice plantations, and beautiful beaches!

Your accommodation is the wonderful Park Hyatt.  This is a fantastic property that uniquely sits majestically on a stunning white fringed beachfront yet within walking reach of the Spice Island’s capital, Stone Town.  Stone Town is captivating, fascinating and a true Swahili assault on the senses.  It is a World Heritage Site that is rich in history and culture; this jewel of an island capital consists of crumbling palaces, cobbled, tiny winding streets lined with traders and mosques giving the muezzins’ call to prayer at daybreak.

No visit to the Park Hyatt is complete without a visit to their tranquil spa, the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town.  Here you can rejuvenate the body, calm the mind and nourish the soul.  Indulge in a selection of holistic therapies and body treatments with a varied menu designed to restore, refresh and replenish.

Jean’s Tanzania Highlight Tour includes a Stone Town tour, a spice plantation tour and an optional dhow boat building tour (which is fascinating for photographers).
