The camp takes its name from the Shangaan language, where "Shindzela" means honey badger, reflecting this remarkable place's wild spirit and rugged beauty.

Shindzela Tented Safari Camp offers a thoughtfully designed layout that enhances your safari experience. The open-plan lounge and dining room provide a cozy setting for meals (breakfast and lunch), while the bar area overlooks a dry river bed and a small watering hole where animals gather for refreshment during hot summer days.

Relax and cool off in the small swimming pool while enjoying a good book or gazing out into the bush. As the sun sets, their open-air boma becomes the perfect spot for a memorable dinner (weather permitting).

Your adventure begins in our safari-style tents, nestled under thatch (grass-roof) structures. These comfortable tents can be configured as twin or double-bedded accommodations, ensuring a peaceful night's rest. Imagine sipping your morning coffee on your private wooden deck or freshening up in your semi-open en-suite bathroom.

We are committed to providing an affordable wildlife safari without compromising on comfort. The camp can accommodate a maximum of sixteen guests across eight safari tents. Here, you'll be welcomed with warm South African hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere that allows you to immerse yourself in the true African wilderness.

Shindzela takes pride in its commitment to eco-friendliness, utilising solar power and gas energy throughout the camp. While you won't find power outlets in your tent, a convenient charging station in the main guest area ensures your devices are always ready for that perfect picture.

Shindzela offers two daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles: early morning and late afternoon/early evening. Their knowledgeable guides will help you track big mammals, identify insects and plants, and spot some of the 350 bird species in the area.

Keep an eye out for crocodiles and hippos at the dams, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of wild dogs. Nocturnal creatures such as bush babies, civets, genets, African wild cats, and porcupines add to the thrill of the safari.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, you can choose to substitute one game drive with a morning walking safari led by experienced, qualified, and armed trails guides. These educational walks are limited to a maximum of 8 guests and provide insights into the fascinating fauna and flora of the African bush.

Please note that specific criteria apply for participation in morning walking trails, including good English proficiency, physical fitness, and an age range of 16 to 60 years. At Shindzela, guests over 60 should consult with their GP to obtain a medical certificate affirming their ability to walk in the African bush for about 2.5-3 hours.

We recently returned from Kenya, had a fabulous safari designed by Deon de Villiers of Safari Guru. We had some wonderful sightings and the whole thing went without a single hiccup. The guides were excellent. Deon was so helpful in allowing us to reschedule several times due to COVID restrictions preventing travel. We visited Sirikoi in the Lewa Conservancy and Serian Ngare, Serian Nkorombo and Mara Plains at Masai Mara, each place offering a different experience, each special in its own way. Loved the rhinocerous at Lewa, giraffe giving birth at Ngare, hippopotamus at Nkorombo and cats at Mara Plains, and so so much more. We highly recommend Deon and the Safari Guru team.

We finally got to take our Kenya/Rwanda adventure with Safari Guru post pandemic. Our trip was a fantastic experience that immersed us in Africa. The holiday went as planned, everything was organised so we were gently steered from place to place, which we enjoyed as we found we weren't "travel fit" after sitting on sidelines for two years! Our lodges in Kenya were beautiful, nice and small, felt like you were part of a family, rather than a customer! Rwanda was a highlight, an amazing country with a shocking past that is moving forward beautifully. The advice from Deon to do two gorilla walks was perfect. Our first day we hiked in to mountain and when we got there the heavens opened and it didn't stop! The scouts found 6 gorillas for us to glimpse as they were hiding from rain too! We trekked down in the mud, rivers of water ending up bedraggled! It was a great experience but the next day was perfect! Beautiful blue skies, trekked up and gorillas were everywhere, sunning themselves and eating vigorously. Was awesome being so close and they couldn't care less! Would highly recommend safari Guru, they planned us a perfect holiday and are easy to contact with queries and answer promptly. Travelling on our own was great as each place we stayed, there were like travellers from around the world to socialise with. Thanks Deon and Ashley
