Ruckomechi Camp Zimbabwe

Ruckomechi Camp Zimbabwe has a stunning setting within its own huge private concession bordering Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe. The area has a special place in our hearts. This is raw, untamed Africa at its very best, set in the middle of the Zambezi Valley. A remote and beautiful place with spectacular views of the mighty Zambezi River and the mountainous backdrop Zambezi Escarpment and the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia.

One of the most luxurious camps in the area, Ruckomechi Camp together with the smaller Little Ruckomechi Camp offering exclusive use bookings only, sit along the banks of the mighty Zambezi river, gazing out towards the spectacular Zambian escarpment behind which you will see the sunset. Its broad-canopied ana trees create welcomed shade throughout this comfortable and beautiful tented camp.

Mana (meaning four) Pools is a UNESCO World Heritage site long famous for its Zambezi canoe trails and fantastic walking safaris. For an eye-to-eye experience with a world dog or a close encounter with a lion or elephant, nowhere in Africa can top Mana Pools.

The camp is decorated in a modern style with all the modern amenities anyone would desire. It has a chicly adorned central main area with an inviting firepit for pleasant evenings beneath the African night skies. Other unique features include a pool that overlooks a broad sweep of the river and an outdoor "bath with a view" in a secluded, scenic spot. The camp also offers a night on the sleep-out deck. Here you can spend a night under the stars on a beautiful double bed enveloped in a mosquito net. There is no better way of falling asleep than being serenaded by the sounds of nature while you gaze up at the starry skies of Africa.

The ten tents are enormous, including two "family suites" each set along the Zambezi with views of the surrounding bush and river and a wooden deck.

Each canvas 'chalet' is tasteful with clean lines and African art and features natural woods and local materials. Mana Pools can get very hot, so a free-standing fan is a welcome addition, with the mesh windows accessing the breeze. Separated from the bedroom area by canvas is a large open-plan, en-suite bathroom with a wet-room-style walk-in shower and a separate flush toilet. At the same time, mesh "windows" make up much of the wall with further views of the Zambezi River and breeze.

The camp is frequently visited by lone or small families of elephants, each of whom will slowly seek and feed from the seeds from the trees above it. In addition to the visiting elephants, the area is simply a safari enthusiasts' dream. Famed for African wild dogs, Mana Pools has an abundance of lions, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, and a range of antelope; all visit the camp and the water's edge. Birds, such as the colourful carmine bee-eaters, nest on the riverbanks, and fish-eagles and vultures circle the skies.

The area is explored by vehicle or on foot. It offers access to the extensive private concession and the Mana Pools National Park, covering many diverse habitats and, therefore, a wide range of wildlife. For the adventurous canoeing in the Zambezi with a professional Zim Pro canoe guide is magical. But with the sheer numbers of hippos and infestation of crocs may lead you more toward a larger water vehicle! As the camp is outside of the national park, it offers the plus of the relative safety of motorboat cruises down this awe-inspiring river and the massive plus of tigerfish fishing (catch and release) in the Zambezi (both of which are prohibited from the camps in the national park).

Any trip onto the Zambezi offers the opportunity of seeing the large numbers of waterbirds and coming eye-to-eye with the other wildlife that are attracted to the Zambezi.
