Royal Chundu Zambia River Lodge Guest Lounge

Royal Chundu Zambia, a haven of quiet solitude and untouched beauty, is situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River just upstream from the magnificent Victoria Falls on a 15 km stretch of private waterway, which is protected by two sets of rapids.

Explore the lifeblood of Victoria Falls – canoe the waters where hippo pods roam, toss your line into the deep-flowing channels to wrangle the stubborn tiger fish, meet the people who call the riverbanks home and meander along its current on a sunset cruise. Venture to Katombora Island in the middle of the Zambezi, peppered with 2,000-year-old jackalberry trees and python creepers. Picnics on Persian rugs are set up beneath the trees, accompanied by the sounds of the coursing rapids and African fish eagle’s cry.

Voted as the 4th Best Resort in Africa and 9th Best Resort in the World in the Condé Nast Traveler’s 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards, Royal Chundu sits on the banks of the Zambezi River which hugs the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Zambia's first and only Relais & Châteaux property, Royal Chundu encompasses two lodges, River Lodge and Island Lodge, both with views of the Zambezi. 10 exclusive River Lodge suites, set among the trees are nests of seclusion and peace. The charm and secrecy of the 4 spacious Island Lodge villas is accentuated by its location on the private Katombora island in the middle of the river, sheltered by rapids.

River Lodge Chalets

River Lodge is the main hub at Royal Chundu and the larger of the two lodges. There are 10 magnificent and spacious river-front suites at River Lodge. The entire lodge looks out onto the mighty Zambezi creating a spectacular and dramatic setting with the Matetsi Private Game Reserve on the opposite side of the river. Each suite has a double shower, air-conditioning, a fan, mosquito nets, a king-size bed and a generous deck with excellent views of the surroundings.

Island Lodge Suites

Island Lodge is the more private and exclusive of the two lodges at Royal Chundu. Located on Katambura private island, the lodge is surrounded by gentle river channels and dotted with Baobabs and two thousand year old Jackalberry trees. There are four magnificent villas at Island Lodge. Each villa has a spectacular deck, a large open-air bath, a glass-walled double shower as well as air-conditioning, a fan, mosquito net and a king-size, extra-length bed.

Royal Chundu activities are tailor-made to create personal guest experiences suited to couples or groups. These activities are focused on Family, Romance, Adventure, Wildlife & Birding, Culture and Fishing.

Game viewing is best from July to early November, and the wide open plains are home to plenty of game; lion, leopard, African wild dog, and plenty of antelope species are abundant, and elephants and buffalo can be seen swimming out to the grass-covered islands to graze along with crocodile and hippo.

If your interest lies in photography, the Zambezi River is full of potential, a magical, moving destination for photographers of all levels to lose themselves in.

While floating down the river on a boat cruise, raise your camera to the scenes lit by the sunrises or sunsets , the golden light cast over the river and its banks; to the elephant herds coming for a drink and the other wildlife in the reserve on the opposite side of the river; the otters, waterbuck, hippos and crocodiles wading in the water. You can also practice your portraits, on friends, family, and other travel partners, with the Zambezi as your backdrop.

Explore the lifeblood of Victoria Falls by canoe, going boldly into the waters of the upper Zambezi River, where hippo and crocodile roam. Travel downstream in our inflatable canoes, with one of our local guides to accompany you. Each journey down our waters is a chance to measure yourself against the power of the river and its animals, a chance to find stillness, to get up close and intimate with nature, and to see and hear more than you could ever imagine.
