Mara Plains Camp

Mara Plains Camp in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Park is one of the countries only two Relais & Chateaux properties, with the other being sister property ol Donyo Lodge)! This intimate and stylish luxury safari camp combines the finest in wildlife safaris with the absolute best of African hospitality and guiding professionalism.

Not only will the camp's main area take your breath away, but after crossing the bridge and entering the reception area, Africa and its natural beauty are indeed revealed. Positioned perfectly with a single acacia tree on an African horizon, it offers the epitome of the East African savannah.

Guest areas consist of the communal mess; guest lounge and a separate library to enjoy a quiet afternoon passing the time reading books or editing photographs. Flowing fabrics, open-air spaces and strong teak structures ground the space, while a mix of brass and campaign-style finishings makes the area a welcoming retreat.

The intimate camp offers seven tents, each with deep canvas canopied ceilings, rough-hewn wood floors and accents of a rich safari history; a constant reminder of East Africa's bold statement of being the birthplace of safari. The detail of thick Lamu wood doors, deep purples, and brass accents transport guests to a time and land far away. The lavishly-appointed en-suite facilities which including a deep copper bath and an extensive private verandah complete what is genuinely a remarkably stunning concept.

Kenya's Olare Motorogi Conservancy is reputed to have the lowest vehicle density in the Maasai Mara Reserve region, while also having one of the greatest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa. With only one guest bed per 350-acres, this pristine wilderness offers unadulterated space for the wildlife to roam and thrive, as nature intended. Mara Plains Camp itself is perfectly positioned for the ever-elusive leopard residents to go about their clandestine activities in close proximity to camp, and some animals have become firm favourites such as Fig and her many offspring.

One of the main drawcards to the area though are the two migrations – the famous annual Serengeti migration and the green season migration from Loita Plains; where an additional 50,000 wildebeest and over 100,000 zebras contend for grazing rights.

These stylistic elements coupled with thoughtful environmental features such as solar power and no cement make Mara Plains Camp highly sought after and one of the best modern-day safari retreats. In true Great Plains Conservation fashion, one can expect specialised and professional safari-guiding; that has become synonymous with this luxury brand.
