WHEN TRAVEL IS PERSONAL (THE SAFARI GURU WAY)

It was halfway through a casual Saturday: a family day out on the boat at Lake Macquarie.

My phone rang, and I saw the name appear on the screen. It was a repeat Safari Guru traveller, only a few weeks away from departure.

She is in her eighties, and I knew immediately that she would not be calling unless something was wrong.

Her voice was anxious. “Deon, I have accidentally sent Safari Guru another full payment for my trip.”

She was understandably distressed. It was a significant amount of money, and she was worried that it might disappear into the complicated world of banking systems, payment references and automated processes.

More than anything, she needed reassurance.

She was relieved to have reached me, even though it was a Saturday. She wanted to know that everything would be alright—and whether I could personally identify the duplicate payment and help return her money.

I reassured her that, if the transfer comes through as a duplicate, it should reflect in our account by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. As soon as it arrived, I would ensure it was returned that same day.

It was a short call. Just a few minutes.

But by the end of it, her distress had turned to relief. She could return to her weekend knowing that a costly mistake had not become a complicated problem.

WHO WOULD YOU CALL?

The conversation stayed with me.

Not because resolving a duplicate payment is unusual. Things happen. Bank details are entered twice, payments are scheduled incorrectly, and travel arrangements can involve large sums at a time when people are understandably cautious.

It made me think about what might have happened if she had booked through a large multinational agency, an online platform or directly with an overseas safari operator.

Who would she have called on a Saturday?

Would she have reached someone who knew her, understood the trip she was about to take and recognised why she was so concerned? Or would she have been asked for a booking reference, directed to an accounts department, and left to explain the situation to a different person each time?

How long might she have waited for an answer?

Would the process have involved overseas bank accounts, foreign exchange transfers, administration fees or multiple teams across different time zones?

None of this is to suggest that larger travel businesses cannot provide good service. Many do. But the bigger the system, the easier it is for a client to become a booking number moving through a process.

For us, that is not how travel should feel. Travel is personal!

THE SAFARI GURU ETHOS

At Safari Guru, we design highly personalised African journeys, but our involvement does not end once the itinerary has been confirmed and the invoice paid.

A safari is often a once-in-a-lifetime trip. It may be a long-held dream, a significant anniversary, a family celebration or the first time someone has travelled so far from home. Clients are entrusting us with meaningful time, considerable money and, often, a great deal of anticipation.

That deserves a high-touch, considered approach.

Every Safari Guru traveller deals with real people who know their name, their itinerary and the reasons behind the choices we have made together. We are available by phone, not hidden behind a generic help desk. Before travel, we create a WhatsApp group so that clients can stay connected to us, ask the small questions as they arise and know that someone familiar is close by throughout the journey.

It is not about being intrusive. A safari should still feel wonderfully free, remote and unhurried.

It is about being present when it matters.

THE VALUE WE BRING

The Safari Guru way is decades of African safari experience channelled into the design of each journey: firsthand knowledge of camps, guides, seasons, logistics, wildlife areas and the small details that are rarely obvious from a brochure or booking platform.

But knowledge alone is not enough.

The real value of a specialist travel company is what happens before, during and after the booking. It is the confidence that someone is thinking ahead, that a question will be answered, that a problem will be owned, and that there is a familiar person at the other end of the phone when you need one.

Our Safari Guru approach has always been simple: thoughtful planning, honest advice, tailored safari ideas and genuine personal care from first conversation through to the moment our clients return home.

That Saturday call was not a grand safari emergency. No aircraft was delayed. No camp had to be changed. No wildlife encounter was at stake.

But it mattered.

Because when someone trusts us with their African travel, they are never simply a reference number in a system.

They are a Safari Guru traveller—and that relationship is at the heart of every journey we create.

If you’re planning a special African safari holiday, and you want to travel the Safari Guru way, give us a call. We’ll meticulously plan your journey, handle all the logistics (ground and air transfers), and be there at every step of the way.
